Modern content management systems allow for a high degree of modularisation. This means that they are increasingly moving away from the idea of the "page" or the rigidly arranged "product" and are instead putting their emphasis on flexibly configurable data blocks that can be assembled into larger units as needed. This gives (data) journalism the tools to further develop its services in the spirit of Modular Journalism and to systematically separate content and data from their use and presentation.
In this session, we want to delve deeper into the ideas behind Modular Journalism and give an overview of its application in practice. In particular, we will try to answer the question of how data journalism could benefit from more modular approaches.

Miranda is the executive product manager of BBC News Labs. Her background combines design, digital innovation, and social science. She specialises is running applied, interdisciplinary research that brings together participatory approaches with emerging technologies. Prior to being at the BBC she led the Open Data Institute's R&D programme and worked extensively with the Wellcome Trust's mental health team.
Meik Bittkowski ist am Science Media Center als Leiter Forschung und Entwicklung, insbesondere für das SMC Lab zuständig. Er hat langjährige Erfahrung mit datenjournalistischen Projekten, u.a. am HITS in Heidelberg. Er studierte Philosophie und Germanistik sowie Informatik und wurde in Philosophie promoviert.
Christina Elmer ist Professorin für Digitalen Journalismus und Datenjournalismus an der TU Dortmund. Zuvor arbeitete sie in unterschiedlichen Positionen in der Redaktion des SPIEGEL, zuletzt als stellvertretende Entwicklungschefin. Von 2017 bis 2019 gehörte sie zur Chefredaktion von SPIEGEL ONLINE. Sie ist Gesellschafterin bei AlgorithmWatch, engagiert sich im Vorstand des Vereins Netzwerk Recherche und wurde vom MEDIUM MAGAZIN als „Wissenschaftsjournalistin des Jahres 2016“ ausgezeichnet. Weitere Stationen als Datenjournalistin im Team Investigative Recherche des Magazins STERN und bei der DPA sowie als Volontärin beim WDR in Köln und Münster. Studium der Journalistik und Biologie an der TU Dortmund.
Uli Köppen is Head of AI + Automation Lab and Co-Lead of investigative data team BR Data at German Public Broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk. In this role she’s working with interdisciplinary teams of journalists, coders and product developers specializing in investigative data stories, interactive storytelling and experimentation with methods such as bots and machine learning. As a Nieman Fellow 2019 she spent an academic year at Harvard and MIT and was part of Online News Association's Women's Leadership Accelerator 2022.
